Avoiding Arizona Firework Accidents

National Fireworks Safety Month runs the entire month of June, so now is the perfect time to brush up on fireworks safety to help protect your family, friends, and neighbors.

Did You Know?

  • In 2023, U.S. emergency rooms treated approximately 9,700 people for fireworks-related injuries.
  • More than half of these injuries affected the hands, fingers, head, face, and ears.
  • Sparklers, which burn at around 2,000°F, caused about 700 injuries last year alone.

9 Fireworks Safety Tips for a Safe Celebration

  1. Attend a professional display. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by watching a professional show — it’s safer, and the display will likely be far more impressive.
  2. Know your local laws. Check your local and state regulations before purchasing or using fireworks to ensure they’re legal in your area.
  3. Keep children at a safe distance. Fireworks should only be handled by adults, and children should always be kept at a safe distance.
  4. Have water nearby. Keep a bucket of water or a hose on hand in case of an emergency.
  5. Light fireworks carefully. Only light one firework at a time, and move away quickly after igniting it.
  6. Never relight a dud. If a firework doesn’t go off, don’t try to relight it — soak it in water before disposing of it.
  7. Protect your eyes. Wearing safety glasses can help prevent serious eye injuries from sparks or debris.
  8. Don’t alter or combine fireworks. Modifying fireworks can make them unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
  9. Stay sober. Fireworks and alcohol don’t mix — having a clear head ensures you stay in control and keep those around you safe.

Fireworks are a favorite tradition, but mishandling them can lead to serious injuries or legal consequences, including fines and jail time.
