Auto Accident Tool Kit

Last month we brought you Accident Basics. This month we bring you the Accident Tool Kit.

Most of us carry jumper cables; tire changing tools, and maybe a small pair of pliers, a multipurpose tool, and perhaps a first aid kit in the car. Few of us carry an Accident Tool Kit. It is easy to do, and can be assembled at very little cost. Keep it in the trunk, and if you ever need it, you will be glad it is there.

  • If your cell phone doesn't have a camera, a disposable camera with flash.
  • Flares (at least two)
  • Flashlight
  • First Aid Kit
  • Notepad and Pen
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Registration
  • Small blanket
  • Umbrella

Many car accidents happen on rainy days, or at night. You will find the umbrella, the flashlight, and the blanket to be very helpful items to have while you wait for the police or the Para Medics to respond to the scene.

Buy a small backpack, and keep these items in the backpack stowed in your trunk. Keep the batteries out of the flashlight. They last longer that way, and should be replaced annually whether you use them or not.

Make a copy of last month's "Accident Basics" and keep a copy in the backpack with the tools. The camera should be replaced annually to make sure the battery is fresh, and the film has not been damaged from the heat. Make a copy of the proof of insurance and registration on the car, and keep it in the back pack so you don't have to be sorting through the glove compartment trying to find them among the other odds and ends that seem to end up there.

The Tucson Police Department has adopted a new policy of not responding to collisions unless there are reported injuries that require transport to the hospital. It is becoming increasingly important to be pro-active at the scene, and record the information that we used to rely on the police to do.

Take the photos. Ask the questions. Get the insurance information. Get the cars and yourself out of traffic if you can.

Make an Accident Tool Kit for each of the cars in your households.
