Five Steps to Take After an Auto Accident

Automobile accidents happen every day. After the accident, the victims are often dazed, confused, and may not have the best judgment. If you are in a car accident, here are five steps to take:

Treat your injuries: If you are injured, the most important thing is to seek medical treatment. Go to the emergency room if immediate attention is necessary, or otherwise follow up with your regular physician. If you have insurance, bill it for all of your treatment as usual. If you don’t, seek out a doctor who may agree to be paid out of settlement proceeds.

Document the scene: While you are still on the scene of the accident, try to take pictures or video of the premises. Even better, have someone else do it. Most cell phones today are equipped to take high quality images.

Investigate the causes: If you are able, interview witnesses to the accident and gather their contact information. Make sure you get contact and insurance information from the other driver. Call the police and request that they prepare a report (if you aren’t at fault).

Document your injuries and expenses: Take photos at the scene of your injuries, if possible. Keep track of all of your receipts, expenses, and time away from work due to your injuries.

Call your lawyer and insurance agent: A knowledgeable car accident lawyer can help you deal with your insurance company as well as advise you on the merits of your case. Your lawyer deals with the other driver’s insurance company as well. You may be entitled to payment for medical bills. Your own insurance may also apply if the other driver doesn’t have insurance or if there is not enough insurance.

Taking these five steps after an accident best protects your body and your pocket book. Safe travels.
