Arizona Attorney Board Certified in Injury and Wrongful Death

Leighton Rockafellow Sr. is Board Certified in Injury and Wrongful Death by the State Bar of Arizona.  He is also Board Certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Civil Trial Specialist.  Both of those certifications were obtained in 1991.  Leighton was one of the first attorneys in the State of Arizona to receive Board Certification as a specialist in injury and wrongful death.  He has successfully maintained those certifications ever since.

Board Certification is a recognition that the attorney has demonstrated the skill and experience in a particular field and has demonstrated it through rigorous testing by the State Bar of Arizona and by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.   The Board Certification exam is similar to a second bar exam in the specialty area.

The attorney has to submit a list of cases tried to conclusion before a jury.  The list must include names of opposing counsel, and the judge sitting at the trial.  A rigorous background search is then conducted and opposing counsel as well as the sitting judge must comment on the attorney’s competency.

Further peer review is required to determine if the attorney meets not only the legal skill required for certification but also the ethical standards required of a board certified attorney.

The practice of law has become much like the practice of medicine.  It is so complex that it is impossible for any attorney to remain current in all areas.  Prior to certification being offered, it was widely known that most attorneys specialized, but there was no way to objectively measure their ability to do so.  Board Certification is the objective method that has been in place since 1991.

Nationally as well as State Wide, approximately 4% of all practicing attorneys are certified by a State or National Accredited Board of Specialization.  In Arizona, of 17,000 active practicing attorneys, the State Bar approximates that only 700 are Board Certified.  Leighton Rockafellow Sr. is certified by both a State and National accrediting agency.

When you choose a Board Certified Attorney, you choose someone who has dedicated his or her legal career to a select field of choice.  When you choose a Board Certified Attorney you choose someone who has taken the time to submit himself to the rigorous examination and background check required for Board Certification.

Many attorneys advertise.  Some are not Board Certified in the Specialty they advertise in.  When you choose an attorney, choose a Board Certified attorney in the specialty area you are seeking.  The current specialty areas for the State Bar of Arizona are:  A. Injury and Wrongful Death: B. Criminal:  C. Workman’s Compensation:  D.  Estate and Trust Law:  E. Family Law.  F. Bankruptcy Law: G.  Real Estate Law: H. Tax Law.  The National Board of Trial Advocacy recognizes the following areas of specialties: A. Civil Law: B. Criminal Law: C. Family Law:  D. Social Security Disability Law.
